We're not going to spoil all of them — some places stay good precisely because they don't trend. Here are five we can share.
1. Sunrise from the Spanish Gate
Augusta faces east. At 6am in summer the old town is empty and the light hits the Porta Spagnola perfectly. Bring a coffee, sit on the wall, watch the harbour wake up.
2. The flat rocks past Brucoli's tower
Skip the obvious swimming spot at the inlet entrance and walk five minutes further along the coast. Quiet rock platforms, transparent water, nothing else.
3. A long lunch at a tonnara
A few historic tuna fisheries along the coast have been converted into restaurants. Ask us on arrival — the names change with the season.
4. The Megara Hyblaea ruins
Greek ruins on a windswept plain, ten minutes from the apartment. Almost no one goes. Bring water and a hat.
5. Etna at golden hour, from the sea
On a clear day, from our terrace, Mount Etna catches the last light over the Ionian. That alone is worth the trip.
